The classic 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift describes a great floating island named Laputa, which can be moved about by its inhabitants using a form of magnetic levitation. No doubt, Swift got the idea from a patch of solid-looking Stratocumulus like this one spotted by Charlie Gray (Member 7,670) over Carvoeiro, Faro, Portugal. Swift describes the Laputans as being obsessed with mathematics, astronomy and music. In fact, so lost are they in thought that they cannot function in everyday life unless constantly struck by a bladder full of pebbles to wake them from their daydreams. Each is therefore escorted by a servant, called a ‘clapper’, who performs the essential role. This sounds like a useful service. . #cloudappreciation #cloudspotting #cloudaday #clouds #cloud #stratocumulus
The optical effect known as a ‘glory’, or ‘Brocken Spectre’, can appear as sunlight coming from directly behind you falls onto a layer of cloud. Caused by the diffraction of the sunlight as it scatters back at you from the cloud’s tiny droplets, the glory appears as a ring of rainbow colours centred around the shadow of your head. It’s name draws reference to the golden disc depicted around the heads of saints in Christian art. It is often seen when hill walkers climb through cloud into the sunlight above and look down at their shadows cast onto the mists below. It is also the most egotistical of optical phenomena. When you spot a glory out walking with a group, the optics mean that you will see the ring of colours around the shadow of your own head only. It won't appear to you around the heads of your fellow walkers. And each of them, likewise, will see the glory centred only on themselves. It is surely the optical effect for the selfie generation. .
