In one of the poorest, most remote provinces in Afghanistan, the Rural Green Environmental Organization is working across an area of 1,500km2, covering 90 villages with a cumulative 40,000 residents, to promote a model of community development that is based on peace-building, environmental regeneration, sustainable livelihoods and wildlife protection. . In 2015, from a record 1,461 nominations across 126 countries, this organization was awarded an . . Recipients are chosen for their leadership in the protection, restoration and sustainable management of forests; securing rights to communal lands, territories and natural resources; community-based adaptation to climate change; and activism for environmental justice. . Speaking on behalf of the adaptation and sustainable livelihoods winners, Farkhunda Ateel Siddiqi of Afghanistan asked “governments and the world leaders to ensure that equal space is made for indigenous peoples and local communities in climate negotiations and policy going forward.” . “You see from our projects what can happen when traditional knowledge is cultivated, valued and respected. …We serve as powerful proof that local communities can offer real solutions to saving plant earth and humanity.” . The Equator Initiative brings together the United Nations, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. Awarded biennially, the Equator Prize is designed to shine a spotlight on local efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of nature. .
