Happy Thursdayyyyy!!! So happy to be back to my regular routine! This was my leg finisher today: 3๏ธโƒฃ rounds: โŒalternating KB squats and deadlifts (10 reps of each) + โŒalternating single-leg squats and deadlifts (10 of each on each side) ๐Ÿ”ฅ . This is one of my fave glute finishers because it combines BILATERAL and UNILATERAL exercises and burnnssss ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ! . There's some debate about unilateral exercises...let's discuss... First of all, what's the difference? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸผUNILATERAL movement is movement produced by one limb, whereas, ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸผBILATERAL movement is movement produced by two limbs. . Unilateral movement is good for targeting stabilizing muscles, building balance and establishing mind-muscle connection since you can send more nervous energy (focus) to one side (there's even debate around this and lots of research, but in my own personal experience, I find I can focus more on feeling it in the targeted muscle for lower body exercises when I'm doing it with only one leg instead of two). . Unilateral exercise, however, is NOT GOOD for building muscle or power since you literally cannot lift as much as when you do bilateral movements (as you can see, I'm not using any weight for the single leg exr. Unilateral movement is also not necessarily better for muscle activation (as @bretcontreras1 explains, stabilization = more muscle activation, so being more stable/being on two legs = more muscle activation). . SO, unilateral exercises are good as ancillary/assistant exercises, that's why I pair them with their bilateral counterparts ๐Ÿค“! PERSONALLY, I like being able to use weight for the bilateral versions and then really focus on mind-muscle connection, stability, and balance on the unilateral version! .
