This photo is from one of the best days I have had travelling in Australia. We were heading for Emerald in outback Queensland on our 1500 km drive from NSW. My wife had found a phone number for Begonia homestead , a cattle station set on 14,000 acres on the mighty Maranoa River in the great Australian outback, 75km north of St George & 130km south west of Roma. We gave Anne the owner a quick call and arranged to stay on our way through. We are so glad we did. Anne welcomed us like old friends and even cooked us dinner which we shared with her around the kitchen table. It was country hospitality at its best, everyone who travels in Australia should try and stay at a station or farmstead at least once, it is a wonderful experience and you get to appreciate the sheer size of the country and the remote areas in which some people live here. We were hit with torrential rain on the way to Begonia and spent the last couple of kilometres driving with emu's running along either side of the road, it was the first time I had seen emus in the wild and it was a magnificent site. The rain had just stopped on our arrival at the cattle station and we were greeted with this spectacular view and a rainbow at sunset. I tried to track down Anne when putting up this photo and found that she had sold up a couple of years ago after suffering through drought. I'm happy to see new owners have bought the property and continue to run it as a farm stay and a cafe. https://begoniastation.wordpress.com . Can anyone recommend any other wonderful places to stay in Australia ? Would love to find more places like Begonia, finding people and places like that are why I love travelling.
