Francesca Palmeira - Mato Grosso State, Brazil "I am a who has loved since I was five. I have spent ten consecutive years conducting to assess the damage caused by large on in three different Brazilian biomes. On this day, I was checking a calf killed by a on a cattle ranch in the . When I find a suspect carcass, I usually examine it for internal and external injuries caused by bites and scratches, particularly in the skull, neck and limbs, in order to determine the predator. Diseases, malnutrition and accidents cause much more livestock mortality than predation, which does not exceed 3% of the total stock. Even so, breeders usually use livestock losses as a reason to justify persecution of large cats. I am also interested in understanding the importance of these predators from a human perspective, evaluating the potential for conflict among different stakeholders." #biology

"Accidentally Created Enzyme Can Break Down Plastics" A team of scientists at the University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have engineered an enzyme capable of digesting some of the most commonly polluting plastics. This discovery could eventually be used to recycle millions of tonnes of plastics made of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, which currently persists for hundreds of years in the environment. While analyzing the crystal structure of PETase, a recently discovered enzyme that digests PET, the team inadvertently engineered an enzyme even more capable of degrading the plastic than the one that already exists in nature. The team is now working on an even better version of the enzyme capable of breaking down plastic in a fraction of the time. “Few could have predicted that since plastics became popular in the 1960s huge plastic waste patches would be found floating in oceans, or washed up on once pristine beaches all over the world," said Professor McGeehan, Director of the Institute of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Portsmouth. “We can all play a significant part in dealing with the plastic problem, but the scientific community who ultimately created these ‘wonder-materials’, must now use all the technology at their disposal to develop real solutions.” Image: Electron microscope image of an engineered enzyme digesting PET plastic via Dennis Schroeder/NREL Read more about this fascinating story on http://uopnews.port.ac.uk/2018/04/16/engineering-a-plastic-eating-enzyme/ ═══════════════ Written and Condensed by K. Plot twist: Turns out I can’t find shit but 🤷🏽‍♂️🐍cottonmouths 🐍🤷🏽‍♂️ . . . Not entirely true but some days it feels like it. Seen this big boy in the same spot every day this week. He’s got something funky going on with his face, hopefully it’s not u-know-what, but we’re gonna swab him tomorrow if he’s still there . Also when I found him today the light was like a holy aura around him and I -out loud, alone- said “aw hell yeah you know what’s up” and pulled out my camera . . . #biology

Here are some simple but great ways to enhance your performance and recovery 💪🏽 So get outside enjoy the sun, drink some water, and make sure to get a good nights sleep 😴 Repost from @samsmithopex 3 Keys to Performance Outside the Gym: 1. 20-30 min of direct sunlight each day when the sun is the highest (The light photons from the sun are extremely powerful for a multitude of internal processes) also taking time to “get off the grid” (ie- no phone or music) is vital to our psychological health 2. Half your body weight in ounces of clean water each day as a minimum (dehydration is a major problem and often goes unnoticed) 3. 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night as a minimum (as we age this number will decrease slightly, and the younger we are, the more will need, but 8 is a solid rule of thumb for everyone) IF you want to recover faster, get leaner, and gain more lean mass, you MUST sleep. #biology Wednesday
